It’s that time of year again! No, I don’t mean back to school, or the changing leaves, and not even the chill in the air as we cheer on our favorite football team. I mean ArtWalk time! I really love this cool thing Grand Haven has going on. It’s a lot of fun for our little town. Although I’ve been shooting a ton of weddings this year, I wanted to keep with my baby theme again. And so, without further ado I present to you sweet Miss Amelia napping in the woods at just 6 days old.Grand Haven ArtWalkIf you’d like to see the print in person, or you want to grab a good cup of coffee, stop by Jumpin’ Java and have a look. ArtWalk officially starts on Wednesday, Sept. 21st, so if you stop by to see it after that feel free to grab a ballot and vote for this little sweetie.

Last week I was invited by a photog friend of mine, Craig Watson, to be a small part of a really cool event he was coordinating for high school students called the Harbourfront Prom Dress Event. Girls from all over the area showed up to check out the nearly 200 dresses that were for sale as well as get their hair and makeup done from the variety of vendors. It was really fun watching the girls try on dress after dress in search of just the right one! It was also good to know proceeds were going to support Love INC’s Ministry Center.

I could go on and on about how amazing mentoring a child can be for not only the child but the mentor as well, but sometimes it’s better to just show you. Below is just a teeny bit of the photos I took at the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative’s annual Magic of Mentoring event back in January. It’s a recognition event held to honor the hard work of mentors from Grand Haven to Holland, Coopersville to Hudsonville and everywhere in between throughout the county. If you have just two hours to spare a week please consider becoming a mentor. Get in touch with the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative by calling (616) 994-4580.

I knew it was going to be an interesting two days when I found myself listening to Whitesnake, NPR and Christmas carols on my way up to the Lake Michigan Art Walk’s Christmas Edition at the Frauenthal last Thursday. I was not disappointed. How can you NOT have a great time when you’re in an area with bunches of amazing artists? It was super cool. I was inspired by the great art, of course, but also by the generous, giving spirit of everyone there. And let me tell you, it is seriously good for the soul to have people ‘Ooohing’ and ‘Ahhing’ over your work! Anyway, here is just a wee bit of eye candy for you from Muskegon’s latest Art Walk:

Those that have worked as a volunteer or in the non-profit world know that no matter how much you give when you volunteer you always get so much more in return. Tonight I’m flying high because I got to spend the afternoon giving back, and it was just so much fun. Because of confidentiality, I cannot share photos or anything about the youth I got to meet in Muskegon and photograph today.

But what I can tell you about is the awesome organization that brought us together. The Michigan Heart Gallery, is a photo exhibit of children in the Michigan foster care system who are waiting for an adoptive family of their own. It was created to help find forever families for children in foster care. The exhibit moves around the state throughout the year so be on the lookout for when it comes close to home. Or, click on the link above and see if you make a ‘heart connection’ with one of the kids listed.
