I could go on and on about how amazing mentoring a child can be for not only the child but the mentor as well, but sometimes it’s better to just show you. Below is just a teeny bit of the photos I took at the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative’s annual Magic of Mentoring event back in January. It’s a recognition event held to honor the hard work of mentors from Grand Haven to Holland, Coopersville to Hudsonville and everywhere in between throughout the county. If you have just two hours to spare a week please consider becoming a mentor. Get in touch with the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative by calling (616) 994-4580.

Magic of Mentoring in Zeeland
March 14, 2011Wedding Photojournalism
September 12, 2010I recently came across a great article by Michael Roney for the Wedding Photojournalist Association and I thought I’d share a wee bit of here:
“These days untold numbers of wedding photographers state in their bios that they have a background in photojournalism. Yet many do not really have any actual professional experience as photojournalists. Some have maybe published just one or two photos, or work occasionally as a freelancer for a newspaper or magazine, while others fudge their own work history and interpretation of the term in order to bolster their own image.
So what, in fact, does this label mean, and can you trust it? Does it even make a difference? When you see this claim, even on the sites of WPJA members, you should definitely ask some questions to determine whether your candidate really has the background and ability to fulfill your expectations.”

I was fortunate enough to be invited to help document a local benefit dinner this last weekend to help celebrate the life of a man who left this world too soon and to establish an education fund for his 2 little children. There were many people and organizations who donated time, talent or goods/food to make this event happen and I’m thankful I was one of those asked to be there. It was a fun night with TONS of food, even more items for a silent auction, good music and most importantly a good turn out. If you want more information check out the event page on Facebook.
My husband, Cory, is a staff photographer at The Muskegon Chronicle. Cory sometimes works as a second shooter at weddings with me, always helps me edit, built my website and brings me spectacular coffee.
Here is a video he made of the Grand Haven Musical Fountain. Did you know you can choreograph your own Musical Fountain show?!
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Okay, so it was just North Beach Park in Ferrysburg a little less than 8 years ago we had two awesome photographers shoot our wedding. One of them, Jeffrey Sauger, is an award-winning freelance photojournalist in metro Detroit. He’s been caught up in a civil rights suit after being arrested for doing his job in 2005. The suit brought sweeping changes to Toledo’s Police Department. Here is a link to a National Press Photographers Association story explaining how it all ended up: http://nppa.org/news_and_events/news/2010/06/sauger.html
